Download bivalirudin in percutaneous coronary intervention PDF file. Bivalirudin is a member of the direct thrombin inhibitor group of anticoagulants. It has been evaluated as an alternative to unfractionated and low-molecular-weight heparins in the settings of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and acute coronary syndrome (ACS). Results of clinical trials to date suggest bivalirudin is a viable alternative to the use of a heparin combined with a glycoprotein (GP) IIb/IIIa inhibitor in these settings. Thrombin has a central role in coagulation and platelet activation in ACS and during PCI. Its direct inhibition is an attractive target for therapy in these settings. Bivalirudin is a 20 amino acid polypeptide hirudin analog. It displays bivalent and reversible binding to the thrombin molecule, inhibiting its action. Direct inhibition of thrombin with bivalirudin has theoretical pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic advantages over the indirect anticoagulants. A reduction in rates of bleeding without loss of anti-thrombotic efficacy has been a consistent finding across multiple clinical trials. There may be economic benefits to the use of bivalirudin if it permits a lower rate of use of the GP IIb/IIIa inhibitors. This article reviews the pharmacology of bivalirudin and clinical trial evidence to date. There are now data from multiple clinical trials and meta-analyses in the setting of ACS and PCI. Early results from the acute catheterization and urgent intervention strategy (ACUITY) trial are discussed.Added on 26 April 2011.
Download integrating bioenergy into computable general equilibrium models – a survey PDF file. In the past years biofuels have received increased attention since they were believed to contribute to rural development, energy security and to fight global warming. It became also clear, though, that bioenergy cannot be evaluated independently of the rest of the economy and that national and international feedback effects are important. Computable general equilibrium (CGE) models have been widely employed in order to study the effects of international climate policies. The main characteristic of these models is their encompassing scope: Global models cover the whole world economy disaggregated into regions and countries as well as diverse sectors of economic activity. Such a modelling framework unveils direct and indirect feedback effects of certain policies or shocks across sectors and countries. CGE models are thus well suited for the study of bioenergy/biofuel policies. One can currently find various approaches in the literature of incorporating bioenergy into a CGE framework. This paper intends to give an overview of existing approaches and to critically assess their respective power. Grouping different approaches into categories and highlighting their advantages and disadvantages is important for giving a structure to this rather recent and rapidly growing research area and to provide a guidepost for future work.Added on 26 April 2011.
Download simulating multiple scattering in hair using a photon mapping approach (2006) PDF file. Simulating multiple scattering correctly is important for accurate rendering of hair. However, a volume of hair is a difficult scene to simulate because scattering from an individual fiber is very structured and forward directed, and because the radiance distributions that arise from many such scattering events remain quite directional. For these reasons, previous methods cannot compute accurate images substantially faster than Monte Carlo path tracing. This paper proposes a new physically accurate method for rendering hair that is based on previous volumetric photon mapping methods. The first pass generates a photon map by tracing particles through the hair geometry, depositing them along paths rather than at scattering events. The second pass ray traces the hair, computing direct illumination and looking up indirect radiance in the photon map. Photons are stored and looked up in 5D position-direction space to allow for the very directional radiance distributions that occur in hair. Together with a new radiance caching method for fibers, our method simulates difficult scattering problems in hair efficiently and with low noise. The new algorithm is validated against path tracing and also compared with a photograph of light scattering in real hair.Added on 27 April 2011.
Download estimation of internet file-access/modification rates from indirect data PDF file. Consider an Internet file for which data on last time of access/modification (A/M) of the file are collected at periodic intervals, but for which direct A/M data are not available. Methodology is developed here which enables estimation of the A/M rates, in spite of having only indirect data of this nature. Both parametric and nonparametric methods are developed. Theoretical and empirical analyses are presented which indicate that the problem is indeed statistically tractable, and that the methods developed are of practical value. Behavior of the parametric estimators is examined when these assumptions are violated, and these estimators are found to be robust against some such violations.Added on 27 April 2011.
The Physics Issues that Determine Inertial Confinement Fusion Target Gain and Driver Requirements: A Tutorial
Download the physics issues that determine inertial confinement fusion target gain and driver requirements: a tutorial PDF file. This paper presents a simplified, tutorial approach to determining the gains of inertial confinement fusion ICF targets, via a basic, zero-dimensional ‘‘0-D’’ , energy ‘‘bookkeeping’’ of input parametrized by ICF drivers’ coupling efficiencies to the target, and subsequent hydrodynamic efficiencies of implosion versus output thermonuclear burn efficiency and target fuel mass. Physics issues/constraints such as hydrodynamic instabilities, symmetry and implosion velocity requirements will be discussed for both the direct drive driver impinging directly on the target and indirect drive x-ray implosion within a driver heated hohlraum approaches to ICF. Supplementing the 0-D model with simple models for hohlraum wall energy loss to predict coupling efficiencies and a simple one-dimensional 1-D model of the implosion as a spherical rocket to predict hydrodynamic implosion efficiencies allows gains to be predicted that compare well with the results of complex two-dimensional 2-D radiation hydrodynamic simulations.Added on 27 April 2011.
Download modern bioenergy in the european union PDF file. The achievement of the proposed bio-nergy objectives and targets for the E.U. (210 M. TOWyear = 12% total gross energy consumption by the year 2010) arc indeed very chaknging. At present, the contribution of bioenergy is 44 M. TOE/year (- 3% of the total consumption). Furthermore, a significant export volume of E.U. bioenergy technology is expected as high as 6 billion ECU/year (year 2010) with the creation of many new industrial manufacturing SMEs (150-280) and about 200,000 direct and indirect new jobs. The recommended high level of bioenergy activity in the E.U. will also open many addition job opportunities (- 2 million in a longer tam) with specific investment of about 150,000 - 230,000 ECU/job.Added on 28 April 2011.
